TotalEnergies and RWE Sign Long-Term Agreement for Green Hydrogen Supply in Germany
Key Ideas
- RWE and TotalEnergies have entered a 15-year agreement for the supply of 30,000 tonnes/year of green hydrogen to the Leuna refinery in Germany, reducing CO2 emissions by 300,000 tonnes/year.
- The green hydrogen will be produced from RWE's 300-Mw electrolyzer in Lingen and delivered to Leuna via a 600-km pipeline, leveraging the German hydrogen core network for transportation.
- This deal is part of TotalEnergies' strategy to decarbonize its European refineries by 2030 and align with its carbon neutrality goal by 2050, with the operator seeking 500,000 tpy of green hydrogen for its sites.
- TotalEnergies' collaboration with RWE follows its partnership expansion with Air Liquide SA, emphasizing its commitment to increasing green hydrogen production for refinery decarbonization across Europe.
TotalEnergies SE and RWE AG have signed a significant long-term agreement for the supply of green hydrogen to TotalEnergies’ Leuna refinery in Germany's state of Saxony-Anhalt. RWE will provide 30,000 tonnes/year of green hydrogen from its 300-Mw electrolyzer in Lingen to the refinery over a 15-year period starting in 2030. The agreement aims to reduce the Leuna platform’s emissions of CO2 by 300,000 tonnes/year. The green hydrogen will be transported directly to the refinery through a 600-km pipeline connected to the German hydrogen core network. This deal signifies the largest quantity of carbon-neutral hydrogen ever contracted from a German electrolyzer. TotalEnergies plans to decarbonize all hydrogen used in its European refineries by 2030 as part of its long-term strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The company is actively seeking 500,000 tpy of green hydrogen for its sites. Additionally, TotalEnergies recently expanded its partnership with Air Liquide SA to boost green hydrogen production for refinery decarbonization in Belgium and the Netherlands. The agreement with RWE underscores TotalEnergies' commitment to sustainable practices and aligns with its transition away from traditional oil and gas operations.
