Toyota and Hexagon Purus Collaborate for Sustainable Hydrogen-Powered Transportation in California
Key Ideas
  • Hexagon Purus to supply hydrogen storage systems and battery packs to Toyota for heavy-duty fuel cell electric powertrain kits, supporting emission reduction efforts in California.
  • Toyota's zero-emission powertrain receives certification from CARB, aiding compliance with strict emissions regulations.
  • Tri-gen system at the Port of Long Beach generates renewable electricity, hydrogen, and water, showcasing the potential for scalable hydrogen-based technology.
  • Collaboration between Toyota, Hexagon Purus, and FuelCell Energy Inc. aims to create immediate and long-term environmental benefits, including CO2 emissions reduction and improved air quality.
Hexagon Purus, a company based in Oslo, Norway, is collaborating with Toyota Motors North America (TMNA) to supply components, including a full hydrogen storage system and high-voltage battery pack, for heavy-duty fuel cell electric powertrain kits. This collaboration aims to support the reduction of harmful emissions in California, particularly in ports like the Port of Long Beach. Toyota has been granted a zero-emission powertrain Executive Order from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), facilitating compliance with stringent emissions regulations. The partnership also involves the creation of the Tri-gen system at the Port of Long Beach, which produces renewable electricity, hydrogen, and water. This system has already showcased its capabilities by refueling Toyota Mirai passenger cars and heavy-duty FCEV Class 8 trucks with renewable hydrogen. The Tri-gen platform is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from the power grid, NOx emissions, and diesel consumption. The companies involved believe that hydrogen-based energy can bring about various environmental benefits, including improved air quality, reduced water usage, and advancements in zero-emission transportation for both light- and heavy-duty vehicles.
