Fortescue's Christmas Creek Green Iron Metal Project Paves the Way for Green Energy in Western Australia
Key Ideas
  • Groundbreaking on Fortescue's Christmas Creek Green Iron Metal Project brings Western Australia closer to becoming a global clean energy powerhouse.
  • The project aims to produce green iron metal by 2025 using green hydrogen, showcasing technology for the Australian green iron industry.
  • The operational Christmas Creek Renewable Hydrogen Mobility Project includes hydrogen fuel-cell coaches that replace diesel coaches, contributing to Fortescue's decarbonization goals by 2030.
Fortescue's Christmas Creek Green Iron Metal Project marks a significant milestone in Western Australia's journey towards a green energy future. The project, which recently broke ground, is set to produce iron using green hydrogen, a renewable source of energy. This initiative is crucial in the broader goal of developing a green iron industry in the region and positioning WA as a major player in the global clean energy sector. According to WA Premier Roger Cook, the project is a pivotal step in making WA a leading producer, user, and exporter of green iron. The accompanying Christmas Creek Renewable Hydrogen Mobility Project is already operational, featuring a hydrogen refueling hub and 10 hydrogen fuel-cell coaches. These coaches, powered by renewable hydrogen produced on-site through electrolysis, are replacing diesel coaches for crew transportation at Christmas Creek. The project, with a $33.8 million investment and support from the Cook Government's Renewable Hydrogen initiative, is expected to produce approximately 195 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually. This production will play a crucial role in Fortescue's commitment to decarbonize its mining operations by 2030, contributing significantly to sustainability efforts within the industry.
