Japan's Eneos and Mitsubishi Corp to Expand Alliance to Include Hydrogen and Decarbonised Fuels
Key Ideas
  • Eneos Holdings and Mitsubishi Corp to explore expanding their alliance to include hydrogen and decarbonised fuels, in addition to sustainable aviation fuel.
  • Collaboration involves the development of hydrogen supply chains using methylcyclohexane (MCH) and the creation of carbon dioxide (CO2)-free hydrogen supply overseas.
  • The partnership aims to utilize Eneos' hydrogen stations for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and Mitsubishi's expertise in building global fuel supply chains.
  • Joint effort to promote synthetic fuels made from CO2-free hydrogen to contribute to combating climate change and the energy transition.
Japan's leading oil refiner, Eneos Holdings, and trading house Mitsubishi Corp announced plans to expand their alliance to include hydrogen and decarbonised fuels alongside sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This expansion is part of a larger initiative by Japanese energy companies to establish global supply chains for low-carbon fuels, supporting the global energy transition to tackle climate change. Initially focusing on a joint feasibility study for SAF commercialization in 2022, the companies now aim to extend their collaboration to develop hydrogen supply chains using methylcyclohexane (MCH) and promote carbon dioxide (CO2)-free hydrogen supply internationally. Leveraging Eneos' hydrogen infrastructure and Mitsubishi's expertise in fuel supply chain logistics, the partnership seeks to enhance the utilization of hydrogen in the mobility sector, particularly for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). Additionally, the joint efforts will target the advancement of synthetic fuels derived from CO2-free hydrogen. This strategic alliance reflects a positive outlook towards hydrogen and decarbonised fuels in Japan's energy landscape, aligning with sustainable practices and climate change mitigation goals.
