Veolia, Enagás, and Barcelona City Council Launch Innovative Cold Recovery Solution at Port of Barcelona
Key Ideas
- Inaugurated at the Enagás LNG terminal in the Port of Barcelona, a new cold recovery solution generates 131 GWh/y of sustainable energy, avoiding 32,000 tpy of CO2 emissions.
- The recovered energy benefits major infrastructures in South Barcelona, including Fira de Barcelona and Generalitat de Catalunya offices, enhancing the city's environmentally-friendly transformation.
- Veolia's partnership with Mercabarna aims to supply eight food pavilions and various food sector companies with the recovered cold, boosting sustainability in the food industry.
- Veolia and Enagás plan to replicate this solution in LNG terminals globally, emphasizing the potential for the production of low-carbon local energy and contributing to energy sovereignty and decarbonisation.
Veolia, Enagás, and Barcelona City Council have collaborated to inaugurate an innovative cold recovery solution at the Enagás LNG terminal in the Port of Barcelona. This solution, now operational, generates 131 GWh/y of sustainable, low-carbon energy, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 32,000 tons per year. By recovering residual cold from LNG regasification, the technology ensures local energy supply to South Barcelona and part of L'Hospitalet, benefiting major infrastructures in the area.
The project, which includes a partnership with Mercabarna, aims to provide sustainable cold to food pavilions and companies in the food sector. Additionally, Veolia and Enagás plan to expand this solution to other LNG terminals globally, highlighting the potential for producing low-carbon local energy. The initiative emphasizes the importance of local supply solutions in addressing global energy challenges and promoting decarbonisation.
Veolia's CEO, Estelle Brachlianoff, expressed the significance of waste heat and cold recovery in Veolia's ecological transformation strategy, emphasizing the solution's replicability and positive impact on territorial decarbonization. Enagás CEO, Arturo Gonzalo, highlighted the project's role in promoting sustainability and innovation in Barcelona, contributing to a carbon-neutral economy. Laia Bonet, First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona City Council, emphasized the project's pioneering nature, focusing on energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and public-private collaboration for resilient and sustainable cities.
