Chinese Manufacturer Hygreen Energy to Invest Billions in Green Hydrogen Projects in Andalusia
Key Ideas
  • Hygreen Energy and partners to invest over 2 billion euros in green hydrogen projects in Andalusia.
  • Plans include building a new plant for electrolysers and green hydrogen production.
  • Andalusia, leveraging its renewable energy potential, aims to become a green hydrogen leader in Europe.
  • Green hydrogen, crucial for decarbonisation, currently requires subsidies due to high production costs.
Chinese electrolyser manufacturer Hygreen Energy announced a significant investment of more than 2 billion euros in green hydrogen projects in Andalusia, Spain. The investment will facilitate the construction of a new plant dedicated to producing electrolysers and green hydrogen plants. The electrolyser factory is set to have a capacity of up to 5 gigawatts, focusing initially on 5-megawatt electrolysers. Andalusia, known for its abundant wind and solar power potential, is strategically positioning itself to lead in the green hydrogen sector within Spain and Europe. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable electricity, is vital for the future decarbonisation of Europe's economy. However, despite its importance, the high production costs associated with green hydrogen projects make them non-competitive without subsidies. This initiative showcases a key step towards sustainability and renewable energy development in the region, highlighting the growing global interest in green hydrogen technologies.
