Fortescue's Partnership with Hyproof Boosts Green Hydrogen Production in Australia
Key Ideas
  • Fortescue Metals Group invests in Chinese electrolyzer manufacturer Hyproof, enhancing green hydrogen production.
  • Hyproof focuses on fluorine-based film and ion exchange membranes critical for PEM systems, aiding Fortescue's electrolyzer facility in Gladstone, Queensland.
  • Funds raised to expand production lines for anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers, supporting Fortescue's global green hydrogen projects.
  • Fortescue's CEO sees the partnership as a step towards becoming an original equipment manufacturer in green hydrogen production.
Fortescue Metals Group from Australia has made a significant investment in Chinese electrolyzer membrane manufacturer Hyproof. This investment of up to $14 million, co-led with GL Ventures, aims to boost green hydrogen production. Hyproof specializes in producing fluorine-based film and ion exchange membranes crucial for PEM systems. The funding, part of Hyproof's Series B round, will be utilized to expand production lines for anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers. Fortescue plans to potentially incorporate Hyproof's PEM solutions in its 2 GW electrolyzer facility in Gladstone, Queensland. This facility, which opened in April, will focus on producing electrolyzers designed by Fortescue's team, supporting their global green hydrogen projects. Mark Hutchinson, CEO of Fortescue Energy, highlighted how the partnership with Hyproof will establish the company as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in green hydrogen production. This move not only supports the development of green energy projects but also enables the design and manufacture of specialized equipment to drive green hydrogen initiatives both internally and externally.
