Repsol has embarked on a groundbreaking investment in the region of Catalonia, specifically in Tarragona, to establish the first plant in Europe that will convert urban waste into renewable methanol and circular products. The Ecoplant, expected to receive an investment exceeding €800 million, will utilize advanced gasification technology to transform municipal solid waste into 240,000 tons of renewable fuels and circular products annually. This initiative not only aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector but also contributes to the circular economy by giving a second life to waste that would otherwise end up in landfills. The project is set to create 340 jobs upon operationalization and 2,800 jobs during the construction phase, emphasizing Repsol's dedication to industrial employment and economic development in the area. Furthermore, the Ecoplant has been selected by the European Union to receive funding from the Innovation Fund for its potential in emissions reduction and innovation. Repsol's strategic focus on renewable methanol aligns with the EU's targets to decrease energy carbon intensity, especially in maritime transport.
