In May, the Western Australia Parliament passed the Petroleum Legislation Amendment Act 2024, a significant package of legislative amendments that aims to strengthen the state's petroleum legislation and unlock new industries. The Act introduces a framework for the permanent transport and storage of greenhouse gases in the state, as well as enabling the exploration and production of naturally occurring hydrogen through regulated substances. The legislation also officially recognizes care and maintenance, decommissioning, and rehabilitation as distinct phases of petroleum operations. Moreover, it supports the implementation of the polluter pays principle. The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has already begun the process of developing supporting regulations for the new legislation and is committed to ongoing engagement with stakeholders. These legislative changes are designed to enhance the regulatory framework in Western Australia, promote sustainable practices in the petroleum industry, and facilitate the growth of new sectors within the state's economy.
