ACWA Power Partners with Tunisia for Massive Green Hydrogen Export Project
Key Ideas
  • ACWA Power and the Tunisian Ministry of Industry collaborate on a green hydrogen project to produce 600,000 tons annually for EU export.
  • The project involves power generation units of up to 12 GW from renewable sources, electrolysis devices, and infrastructure for direct pipeline connection.
  • Tunisia aims to export green hydrogen via the 'South 2' pipeline, a key initiative supported by the EU Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity.
  • The national strategy targets exporting six million tons of green hydrogen to the EU by 2050, indicating a significant long-term commitment to renewable energy.
ACWA Power Co. and the Tunisian Ministry of Industry have inked a memorandum of understanding to explore the deployment of a substantial green hydrogen project. This initiative is designed to yield approximately 600,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, divided into three phases. The produced green hydrogen is intended for export to the European Union. Under the MoU, ACWA Power will be responsible for constructing, operating, and maintaining power generation units capable of producing up to 12 GW from renewable energy sources. The project will also incorporate storage systems, transmission lines, a water desalination plant, electrolysis devices, and additional infrastructure elements to facilitate a direct connection to the primary pipeline. The initial phase will focus on installing renewable energy units with a capacity of four GW, an electrolysis capacity of two GW, and battery storage facilities to produce 200,000 tons of green hydrogen yearly. The ultimate goal is to export the green hydrogen through the 'South 2' pipeline, which is part of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity's project of common interest. The pipeline links Tunisia with Italy, Austria, and Germany. Tunisia's overarching strategy for green hydrogen entails an ambitious plan to export over six million tons of green hydrogen to the EU by 2050, highlighting a strong commitment to sustainable energy practices.
