Georgia, a country with minimal energy independence, is set to benefit from the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) Energy Storage and Green Hydrogen Development Project. The project aims to enhance energy security, reduce reliance on grid stability support from neighboring countries, and facilitate private sector participation in green energy development. A technical study by EU-funded consultants recommended Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) as the most suitable option for grid stability improvement and integrating variable renewable energy (VRE) due to cost-effectiveness and community opposition to alternatives like pumped hydro storage. With Georgia's electricity largely from renewables, including hydroelectricity, the country still heavily relies on imports for natural gas and oil. The ADB project will see the installation of a 200MW/200MWh battery storage system near Tbilisi to aid in storing surplus renewable power and advance energy independence. The ADB program also includes support for identifying green hydrogen potential and attracting private sector investment. The Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development will oversee the project, aiming to implement reforms and develop legal frameworks for BESS and hydrogen storage technologies. Overall, the project signifies a significant step towards Georgia's energy independence and economic benefit from its renewable resources.
