AM Green Partners with John Cockerill for India's Largest Green Ammonia Project
Key Ideas
- AM Green has placed India's largest electrolyzer order with John Cockerill Hydrogen for a one-million-ton green ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
- The project is set to use advanced pressurized alkaline electrolyzers, powered by a combination of wind and solar energy with pumped hydro storage, to produce low-cost green hydrogen for conversion into green ammonia.
- The collaboration aims to create a green hydrogen ecosystem in India, with plans for a 2 GW per year electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Kakinada to support the country's green hydrogen production targets.
- The production of green ammonia by AM Green across India is projected to reach 5 million tons per year by 2030, contributing significantly to India's and Europe's green hydrogen production goals and supporting various industries in decarbonization efforts.
AM Green has partnered with John Cockerill Hydrogen for India's largest green ammonia project, located in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The project received the Final Investment Decision in August 2024 and will involve the installation of 1.3 GW of advanced pressurized alkaline electrolyzers. The electrolyzers will be supplied in two phases, with the first phase of 640 MW scheduled to commence production in the second half of 2026. The project aims to leverage renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, along with pumped hydro storage, to ensure the production of low-cost green hydrogen for the conversion into green ammonia.
This collaboration also involves the development of a 2 GW per year electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Kakinada to support the project and contribute to India's green hydrogen production targets under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The partnership between AM Green and John Cockerill aims to establish a robust green hydrogen ecosystem in India, positioning the country as a leading exporter of green molecules adhering to EU RFNBO norms.
The project is expected to accelerate the production of green ammonia in India, with a target of 5 million tons per year by 2030. This output will significantly contribute to India's green hydrogen production targets and support various industries in decarbonization efforts. The collaboration is seen as a crucial step towards achieving India's green hydrogen goals and advancing sustainable practices globally in industries like refining, shipping, fertilizers, power generation, and chemicals.
