Azerenerji JSC and Ansaldo Energia recently signed a cooperation agreement to enhance energy efficiency and drive hydrogen innovation in Azerbaijan. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) emphasizes the implementation of projects to improve energy efficiency in power generation within the country. Notably, the agreement includes plans for a hydrogen production plant in Azerbaijan utilizing Ansaldo Energia Group's electrolyser technology. Additionally, the collaboration aims to explore the possibility of establishing a new hydrogen-fired power plant and engage in joint initiatives related to carbon capture and storage, small modular reactors, and energy storage.
Baba Rzayev, the president of Azerenerji JSC, highlighted the organization's commitment to combating climate change through various initiatives. Azerenerji has achieved significant efficiency milestones over the past two decades, including substantial natural gas savings and CO2 emission reductions. The company has also bolstered renewable energy capacity, particularly hydro, by up to 270MW in three years, with plans for further energy transition.
Moreover, Ansaldo Energia's involvement in the Mingachevir Power Plant refurbishment project, where four AE94.3A gas turbines will be installed, is expected to yield substantial environmental benefits. These turbines can burn up to 40% hydrogen in the fuel mix, contributing to emission reductions. The collaboration between Azerenerji and Ansaldo Energia signifies a positive step towards decarbonizing the power sector in Azerbaijan and fostering sustainable energy practices.
