ATCO EnPower and CPKC Complete Hydrogen Production Facilities in Calgary and Edmonton
Key Ideas
  • ATCO EnPower and CPKC have completed construction of hydrogen production and refueling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta.
  • CPKC is retrofitting diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to reduce emissions as part of the Hydrogen Locomotive Program.
  • The facilities include 1MW electrolyzers, compression, storage, and dispensing systems for locomotive refueling, with renewable energy powering the electrolyzer in Calgary.
  • ATCO EnPower provided engineering, procurement, and construction services for the refueling stations and will operate the facilities.
Energy infrastructure company ATCO EnPower, a division of Canadian Utilities Limited, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) have announced the completion and full operational status of hydrogen production and refueling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. CPKC is actively engaged in its Hydrogen Locomotive Program, converting diesel locomotives to use hydrogen fuel cells for emissions reduction. The facilities feature 1MW electrolyzers, compression, storage, and dispensing systems dedicated to locomotive refueling. Notably, in Calgary, renewable electricity from CPKC's 5MW solar power facility powers the electrolyzer. CPKC's Assistant Vice President, Kyle Mulligan, highlighted the significance of these fueling stations in supporting the testing of hydrogen locomotives and the industry's progress towards environmentally friendly transportation. ATCO EnPower played a crucial role in providing engineering, procurement, and construction services for the refueling stations and has secured an agreement to operate them, further solidifying their commitment to sustainable energy practices.
