BAM has achieved a significant milestone in decarbonising its construction sites by trialling the Element 1 dual-fuel hydrogen solution. With a grant from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the project aims to reduce diesel consumption by supplementing it with hydrogen, potentially cutting emissions by up to 30%. The trial involved four dual-fuel excavators deployed across sites in Manchester, Brighouse, and Ravensthorpe, showcasing the real-world effectiveness of this innovative technology. The project, developed with industry partners such as GeoPura, ULEMCo, and SKANSKA, has demonstrated the potential of hydrogen in reducing carbon emissions and improving operational efficiency in the construction industry. Continuous refinement of the dual-fuel technology based on on-site trials has led to improved fuel consumption figures, highlighting the importance of feedback from real-world applications. Additionally, the development of the Element 1 mobile refueller, HyTANKa™, further supports the move towards sustainable construction practices by enabling efficient refuelling of dual-fuel machinery. The success of these trials underscores the collaborative spirit driving industry change and the importance of integrating hydrogen solutions for environmental sustainability. BAM's proactive approach extends to hosting tests for the JCB hydrogen telehandler, showcasing the company's commitment to pioneering environmental performance in the construction sector. This achievement sets a precedent for responsible construction practices, emphasizing the seamless integration of hydrogen as a supplementary fuel with the potential for significant environmental impact.
