BP Joins Hyport Duqm Green Hydrogen Project in Oman
Key Ideas
- BP acquires a 49% stake in the Hyport Duqm green hydrogen project in Oman, joining DEME and OQ as equity partners.
- The project aims to produce green hydrogen powered by wind and solar energy, with a capacity of up to 2.7 GW, targeting sustainable decarbonization.
- Integration with the Port of Duqm infrastructure will facilitate the export of green molecules to European and Asian markets, benefitting various industries.
- Commercial operations are scheduled for 2030-2031, following the completion of the pre-FEED phase, positioning Oman as a key player in green hydrogen production.
Belgium-based DEME and Omani company OQ have partnered with BP to develop the Hyport Duqm green hydrogen project in Oman. BP will hold a 49% stake in the project, while DEME and OQ will retain 25.5% each. The project aims to produce green hydrogen and ammonia using renewable sources, with Phase 1 targeting a capacity of 1.3 GW, expandable to 2.7 GW in Phase 2. The plan includes integrating operations with the Port of Duqm infrastructure to export green molecules to European and Asian markets, supporting industries in their decarbonization efforts. Scheduled for 2030-2031, commercial operations will mark a significant milestone in Oman's contribution to sustainable energy. The project reinforces Oman's commitment to green hydrogen, following a previous agreement with Hydrom in 2023. With BP's involvement, the initiative is set to bolster the country's position in the global green energy landscape.
