Key Ideas
- The California Transportation Commission has allocated $15 million to SamTrans through the TIRCP program for the purchase of 108 new zero-emission buses.
- SamTrans aims to replace its entire diesel fleet with zero-emission buses by 2034, in alignment with California's goal of achieving 100 percent zero-emission fleets for public transit agencies by 2040.
- The funding supports SamTrans' commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality in their communities through sustainable and equitable transportation solutions.
- This allocation is part of a larger $1.9 billion funding initiative by CTC for transportation infrastructure projects across California.
The California Transportation Commission has granted $15 million to the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) to facilitate the procurement of 108 new zero-emission buses. The funding, part of the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP), is intended to aid SamTrans in replacing its aging diesel bus fleet with environmentally friendly alternatives. SamTrans has set a goal to transition its entire diesel fleet to zero-emission buses by 2034, in line with the statewide target of achieving 100 percent zero-emission fleets for public transit agencies by 2040. Currently, SamTrans has 17 battery-electric buses in operation and plans to introduce an additional 20 by the end of the year, alongside 10 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses. Liria Larano, SamTrans Deputy Chief of Bus Fleet, emphasized the agency's dedication to reducing transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing air quality with the support of this critical funding. The $15 million allocation is part of a larger $1.9 billion fund earmarked by CTC for diverse transportation infrastructure projects throughout the state, underscoring California's commitment to sustainable and modernized public transit systems.
