French energy company EDF and Canadian developer Abraxas Power have joined forces to work on an $8.5 billion green hydrogen and ammonia project in Central Newfoundland, Canada. The Exploits Valley Renewable Corporation (EVREC) project is set to produce 200,000 tons of green hydrogen and 1 million tons of green ammonia annually. It will involve the development of up to 3.5 GW of onshore wind capacity along with dedicated port infrastructure for exporting the produced ammonia and hydrogen. The aim is to reach a final investment decision by 2026 and complete construction from 2026 to 2030. This initiative is expected to have a significant positive impact, offsetting over 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 each year and contributing over CAD$5 billion to the provincial budget. Additionally, it is anticipated to create numerous new, highly skilled, and long-term jobs in central Newfoundland, boosting economic growth in the region. With strategic partnerships and a focus on sustainability, the project aligns with EDF's commitment to decarbonization and supporting the energy transition.
