Energy Abundance Development Corporation has unveiled plans for Data City, a massive 5GW data center campus to be situated near Laredo, Texas. The project will cover 50,000 acres of land and is set to incorporate its own power supply, focusing on clean energy sources. While the full build-out timeline for the 5GW capacity is yet to be specified, the first phase comprising 300MW and 1 million sq ft is slated for launch in 2026. The company envisions the facility running on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, along with natural gas in the interim, while it plans to transition to hydrogen power from its adjacent Hydrogen City project, set to come online in 2028. Energy Abundance aims to pioneer a 24/7 green power supply using hydrogen and salt cavern storage, emphasizing sustainability and cost-efficiency in the infrastructure. The company, previously known as Green Hydrogen International, boasts a management team with significant experience in large-scale global energy projects and behind-the-meter engineering. The project's focus on off-grid high-output infrastructure is seen as essential for staying competitive in the AI race, according to board member Andy Steinhubl.
