Decarbonizing the Chemical Industry: Balancing Emissions and Innovation
Key Ideas
  • The chemical industry, crucial for global progress, faces a challenge in its high GHG emissions, particularly from primary chemicals like hydrogen and ammonia.
  • This report analyzes 20 emissions reduction levers across alternative production methods, heat sources, operations, and feedstocks to pave the way for a more sustainable industry.
  • While the majority of these reduction levers are not yet commercially viable, the report highlights 10 that are ready for implementation today, signaling a positive step towards emission reduction.
  • Addressing emissions from primary chemicals is essential to meet climate targets and prevent a significant increase in industrial emissions by 2050.
The chemical industry, a vital part of global manufacturing, is both a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and a key player in enabling emissions reduction solutions across various sectors. While chemicals drive 75% of global energy transition technologies like solar PV cells and EV batteries, the industry is responsible for a considerable share of GHG emissions, particularly from primary chemicals such as hydrogen and ammonia. This report focuses on six primary chemicals that make up a significant portion of the industry's emissions and explores solutions to reduce their impact. The analysis delves into 20 emissions reduction levers, including alternative production methods, heat sources, operations, and feedstocks. Through interviews with experts and a comprehensive literature review, the report identifies 10 commercially viable reduction levers that can be implemented immediately. By addressing emissions from primary chemicals, there is a chance to prevent a drastic increase in industrial emissions by 2050, thus aligning with national and global climate goals. The findings highlight the importance of transitioning towards cleaner processes in the chemical industry to combat climate change effectively.
