Since COP21 in 2015, Djibouti has been dedicated to transitioning to renewable energy sources, aiming to produce 100% of its electricity from clean sources by 2035. The country currently generates 80% of its energy from renewables, mainly through interconnection with Ethiopia and wind farm development. Djibouti's energy mix includes thermal sources to stabilize the network, but the long-term goal is complete energy self-sufficiency. The nation's strategic location offers significant solar, wind, and geothermal potential, with additional projects in biomass, tidal power, and green hydrogen. Liberalization of the energy sector has allowed independent producers to enter, enhancing market attractiveness and introducing competition. Infrastructure milestones like the Ghoubet Bay wind farm and the upcoming Grand Bara solar farm play crucial roles in Djibouti's renewable energy landscape, with plans to expand capacity and achieve universal electrification. While electricity tariffs are a challenge, Djibouti is implementing measures to enhance cost competitiveness, including promoting self-energy production and renewable integration. The government also focuses on raising awareness among businesses and households to embrace better energy management practices.
