EET and SSE Collaborate on 40 MW Green Hydrogen Project in Northwest England
Key Ideas
- EET and SSE are partnering to develop a 40 MW green hydrogen project at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, named Gowy Green Hydrogen.
- The project aims to deliver hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the region, supporting decarbonization efforts and job growth, with plans for operational status by 2028.
- The collaboration signifies a step towards achieving the UK's target of 10 GW of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030, critical for enabling industries to decarbonize and promoting a clean power system.
- SSE's involvement in various hydrogen projects reflects its commitment to playing a pivotal role in achieving net zero, through initiatives like green and blue hydrogen production, storage, and power generation.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) and UK gas-fired power generator SSE have joined forces to establish a 40 MW green hydrogen project at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. Named Gowy Green Hydrogen after the River Gowy and nearby nature reserve, the project is set to provide hydrogen to industrial users in the region, aiding in their efforts to decarbonize operations and fostering job creation. With plans for operationalization by 2028, the project is currently undergoing feasibility studies and site investigations, with a projected planning application in 2025. The joint venture reflects the UK's commitment to low-carbon hydrogen, with a national target of achieving 10 GW by 2030 to support industrial decarbonization and enhance the clean power infrastructure. EET Hydrogen's CEO, Joe Seifert, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with SSE, highlighting Gowy Green as a valuable addition to their existing projects. SSE Thermal's Director of Business Development, Hannah Bronwin, emphasized the importance of scaling up green hydrogen production to address the decarbonization challenges faced by industries. SSE's broader involvement in hydrogen initiatives underscores its dedication to contributing to the net zero goal, encompassing green and blue hydrogen production, storage solutions, and hydrogen-based power generation.
