Egypt and France have finalized a 7-billion-euro agreement to establish a significant green hydrogen and ammonia production facility in Ras Shukeir, Egypt. This deal, sealed during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Egypt, is a pivotal step in Cairo's strategy to become a prominent player in clean energy markets globally. The project will be executed by the Green Fuel Alliance, a collaboration between EDF Renewables from France and the Egypt-UAE firm Zero Waste. Additionally, Egypt's Red Sea Ports Authority and the New and Renewable Energy Authority are involved in the partnership. The construction of the facility will be implemented in three phases, with operations commencing in 2029. Initially, the focus will be on producing 300,000 tons of green ammonia annually, later increasing to 1 million tons per year. Notably, the entire investment for this venture will be spearheaded by the private sector. The compound is planned to feature fields for wind and solar energy, storage facilities, a desalination plant, and an export terminal. This initiative is expected to generate numerous employment opportunities, with a dedicated effort to train Egyptian workers in new green technologies. The primary goal of this project is to support Egypt's environmental objectives, promote eco-friendly shipping through the Suez Canal, and stimulate local production of clean energy components. Through this endeavor, Egypt aims to reinforce its position as a significant contributor to the global green energy landscape and enhance its economic standing in the sector.
