EU and Chile Strengthen Clean Energy and Innovation Partnership
Key Ideas
  • European Commissioner for International Partnerships participates in launching three major initiatives in Chile under EU-LAC Global Gateway Investment Agenda.
  • Initiatives focus on clean energy leadership, boosting innovation in the mining sector, and creating opportunities for local and European communities and businesses.
  • Agreements include funding for renewable hydrogen production, loans for renewable energy projects, and a project to optimize extraction of critical raw materials.
  • Partnerships aim to pave the way for a low-carbon future, create jobs, foster local expertise, and support the global fight against climate change.
European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Síkela, visited Chile to strengthen the partnership between Europe and Chile in clean energy and innovation. Three major initiatives were launched: the Global Gateway Renewable Hydrogen (GH2) Funding Platform, an EIB Loan to BancoEstado for renewable energy projects, and the OptiMiner Project to optimize mining processes for critical raw materials. The GH2 Funding Platform, with a total of EUR 216.5 million, aims to accelerate renewable hydrogen production using Chile's solar and wind resources. The EIB Loan of EUR 105 million to BancoEstado will finance renewable energy and efficiency projects for small businesses and households. The OptiMiner Project, supported by the EU's Horizon Europe program, will improve extraction and processing of critical raw materials like copper and lithium, reducing water and energy usage in mining. These agreements highlight Europe's commitment to sustainable investment, technological collaboration, and a fair energy transition in Latin America.
