European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has announced a €4.7 billion investment package in South Africa to support the country's energy transition and development. The 'Global Gateway Investment Package' includes EU grants of €303 million and loans of €4.4 billion from European financial institutions. The investment focuses on a just energy transition, connectivity infrastructure, and vaccine production and pharmaceuticals. The largest portion, €4.4 billion, is allocated for a just energy transition towards a low carbon economy, with a focus on green hydrogen, critical raw minerals, and green energy projects. This investment aims to create jobs, reduce inequalities, and provide opportunities for all in South Africa. The partnership also aims to boost local investments, trade, and industrial decarbonisation with plans for a 'Clean Trade and Investment Partnership'. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the investment, emphasizing the support for economic growth and job creation. The investment is part of the 'Scaling up renewables in Africa' campaign and will conclude with a pledging event at the next G20 summit in Johannesburg in November 2025.
