The European Commission has allocated nearly €1.25 billion to 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects with Project of Common Interest and Mutual Interest status. This funding, part of the Connecting Europe Facility, includes support for hydrogen and offshore electricity grid projects among five works proposals and 36 studies. The largest share of the funding, around €750 million, is designated for eight electricity grid projects, with the Bornholm Energy Island project receiving the most substantial grant of €645 million. The allocation also includes over €250 million for 21 hydrogen development studies across various European countries, highlighting the increasing importance of hydrogen infrastructure. Additionally, €250 million is allocated for 12 CO2 infrastructure projects, such as the Prinos offshore storage project in Greece and the North Sea L10 Aramis CO2 storage facility in the Netherlands. These projects aim to contribute to decarbonizing economies, integrating energy markets, and enhancing industry competitiveness. Commissioner Dan Jørgensen emphasized the role of these projects in building the energy union and fostering decarbonization efforts. The European Commission plans to finalize the award decision in the coming weeks and open consultations for the next list of energy infrastructure projects.
