The European Commission has recently announced the allocation of nearly €1.25bn in grants from the Connecting Europe Facility to 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects. This funding marks a significant step as it includes support for hydrogen and offshore electricity grid projects for the first time. The projects, categorized as Projects of Common Interest and Projects of Mutual Interest under the Trans-European Networks for Energy policy framework, are aimed at enhancing energy connectivity and sustainability across Europe. Notably, a substantial portion of the funds, around €750m, is designated for 8 electricity grid projects, with the Bornholm Energy Island project in the Baltic Sea receiving the largest grant of €645m to facilitate the integration of 3 GW of offshore wind capacity between Denmark and Germany. Additionally, hydrogen infrastructure is set to benefit significantly from grants totaling over €250m, supporting various development studies such as the BarMar-H2med project between Spain and France. Furthermore, the funding will also contribute towards the construction of 3 CO2 infrastructure projects, with notable investments in storage facilities in Greece, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Overall, this initiative reflects the European Commission's commitment to promoting renewable energy, enhancing energy interconnectivity, and advancing technologies like hydrogen and CO2 infrastructure in the region.
