European Commission Calls for Applications for Energy Infrastructure Projects in Europe
Key Ideas
  • The European Commission has opened a call for energy infrastructure projects of common and mutual interest in Europe, including hydrogen and electrolyser projects.
  • Projects selected for inclusion in the list can benefit from funding, accelerated planning and permitting, improved regulatory conditions, and increased visibility to investors.
  • The list, updated every two years, aims to address existing bottlenecks by focusing on cross-border projects in electricity, hydrogen, smart grids, and CO2 transport and storage.
  • The deadline for submitting projects for the next list is in late 2024, with the final list set to be published by the end of 2025 and coming into effect in early 2026.
The European Commission has announced a new call for applications for energy infrastructure projects of common and mutual interest in Europe. This call marks the seventh list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI) and the second list of Projects of Mutual Interest (PMI), including a combined list of both. The focus is on projects connecting EU countries, with PCIs linking two or more EU nations and PMIs connecting EU countries with others externally. Eligible projects cover areas like electricity transmission, storage, smart grids for electricity and gas, hydrogen and electrolyser projects, and CO2 transport and storage. These projects aim to address bottlenecks in the energy infrastructure sector by promoting cross-border collaboration. To qualify, projects in electricity and hydrogen must be part of the 2024 Ten-Year Network Development Plans of ENTSO-E or ENTSOG. Inclusion in the list provides access to funding from the Connecting Europe Facility, along with streamlined planning, improved regulations, and enhanced visibility to potential investors. The list, updated biennially, includes a variety of projects, such as electricity interconnections, offshore grids, hydrogen interconnections, smart grids, smart gas grids, and cross-border CO2 networks. The article notes that the upcoming deadline for submitting projects in the electricity and hydrogen categories is November 18, 2024, and for smart grids, gas grids, and CO2 projects is December 18, 2024. The final list is scheduled to be published by the end of 2025, coming into effect in early 2026, aiming to advance energy infrastructure development and integration in Europe.
