Europe's H2med Project: Transforming Hydrogen Infrastructure Across Borders
Key Ideas
- Five European TSOs launch Call for Interest for the H2med project, connecting hydrogen networks across Europe, aiming for affordable renewable hydrogen by 2030.
- The project involves building national hydrogen backbones in Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany by 2030 to optimize hydrogen infrastructure design.
- Stakeholders are invited to provide input on renewable hydrogen consumption, production, and marketing along the H2med corridor by December 18, 2024.
- The €2.5 billion project seeks to share results with stakeholders in early 2025 and has made progress in preliminary engineering and environmental impact studies.
Five European transmission system operators (TSOs) have initiated a non-binding Call for Interest for the H2med project, Europe's first major hydrogen corridor. The project aims to develop a transnational infrastructure connecting hydrogen networks from the Iberian Peninsula to France, Germany, and North-West Europe, ensuring the supply of affordable renewable hydrogen by 2030. In Madrid, the Call for Interest was launched by Enagás, GRTgaz, OGE, REN, and Teréga to solicit feedback on infrastructure needs along the corridor until December 18, 2024. Through this initiative, the TSOs aim to understand market requirements up to 2050 and enhance the design of the hydrogen infrastructure to meet local needs effectively. The H2med project plans to communicate the collected insights to stakeholders in early 2025. The project, with a budget of €2.5 billion, envisions the creation of national hydrogen backbones in Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany by 2030, such as the CelZa connection between Portugal and Spain and the BarMar subsea pipeline linking Spain and France. Notably, contracts for preliminary engineering and environmental impact studies have been awarded, underlining progress in project development. The joint efforts of Enagás, GRTgaz, OGE, REN, and Teréga reflect a significant stride towards a sustainable energy transition in Europe.
