H2med Project Launches Call for Interest to Boost Hydrogen Infrastructure in Europe
Key Ideas
- The H2med project, involving partnerships between Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany, aims to optimize hydrogen infrastructure and operational requirements across Europe.
- Key initiatives include the H2med Corridor connecting Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany, with plans to export green hydrogen and meet decarbonization goals by 2030.
- Companies like Enagás, GRTgaz, REN, OGE, and Teréga are actively involved in developing hydrogen infrastructure projects, aiming to secure funding through the Connecting Europe Facility.
- The H2med initiative is part of the EU's strategy to support hydrogen development for decarbonization and reindustrialization, emphasizing the significance of hydrogen in Europe's sustainable energy transition.
The H2med project has initiated a Call for Interest open until December 18th to gauge the needs of future hydrogen infrastructure users within the value chain. This collaborative effort among Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany aims to optimize infrastructure design and operational requirements to facilitate the hydrogen economy in Europe. The project's core, the H2med Corridor, will interconnect hydrogen networks from the Iberian Peninsula to Northwestern Europe, enabling the continent to achieve decarbonization and reindustrialization objectives by providing affordable green hydrogen supply by 2030.
The Call for Interest seeks to identify needs across the Corridor, including the development of national hydrogen backbones by 2030. In Portugal, REN is planning to export 0.75 million tons of hydrogen annually, while in Spain, Enagás is leading the development of the Spanish hydrogen backbone, positioning the Iberian Peninsula as a renewable hydrogen export hub. In France and Germany, GRTgaz, Teréga, and OGE are also working on key hydrogen infrastructure projects to connect production and consumption hubs.
The project stakeholders have applied for funding through the Connecting Europe Facility and have presented the Call for Interest through a dedicated webinar in Madrid. The EU's commitments to support the hydrogen market align with the goals of the H2med project, emphasizing green hydrogen production and import targets. The initiative aims to enhance economic competitiveness, enable carbon savings, and support the development of new industries, emphasizing clean hydrogen's pivotal role in the future energy system.
