Hystar AS has recently awarded thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract to develop an automated electrolyser production line for its new gigawatt (GW) factory in Høvik, Norway. The new production line is set to enhance efficiency and scale operations significantly, expanding Hystar's output capacity from 100 megawatt (MW) to a remarkable 4.5 GW. The compact footprint of the factory, covering just 2,500 m², will house key processes like stack assembly, quality control, and testing under one roof, aiming to streamline manufacturing for large-scale green hydrogen projects. Fredrik Mowill, the CEO of Hystar, emphasized the strategic importance of this development, noting that the automated GW factory will bolster Hystar's capability to provide competitive and efficient solutions for green hydrogen ventures. The design also incorporates a high-volume supply chain for stack components, enabling Hystar to swiftly upscale production to meet increasing market demands. Michael Menneking, CEO of thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering, expressed satisfaction in being chosen by Hystar for this project, highlighting the pivotal role their solutions will play in supporting Hystar's expansion within the hydrogen industry. Hystar has been actively engaged in enhancing its presence in the green hydrogen sector through various initiatives, including collaborations with Gassnova, Norway's CCS state enterprise, and SINTEF, a prominent research organization, to drive the development and testing of advanced electrolyser technologies. Prior to the 4.5 GW project, Hystar had already augmented its electrolyser manufacturing capabilities from 100 MW, a move that laid the foundation for the current GW-scale factory. Thyssenkrupp's recent endeavors also include significant projects such as constructing a 2 GW electrolyser for the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia and delivering a 720 MW electrolyser system for Shell's hydrogen plant in the Netherlands, showcasing their expertise in large-scale hydrogen infrastructure.
