India's National Green Hydrogen Mission: Pilot Projects for Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles and Refuelling Stations
Key Ideas
- The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy announced five pilot projects for hydrogen-based buses and trucks in collaboration with companies like TATA Motors and Reliance Industries.
- These projects aim to establish hydrogen refuelling stations and deploy 37 vehicles on ten routes across India to promote the use of Green Hydrogen.
- State-run entities like NTPC, ANERT, HPCL, BPCL, and IoCL are involved in these projects which have received financial support of ₹208 crore from the Centre.
- The initiatives are expected to validate the technical feasibility, performance, and economic viability of hydrogen-based vehicles and refuelling stations for future scalability in India.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in India has initiated five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to introduce hydrogen-powered buses and trucks. Collaborating with companies like TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and Ashok Leyland, the projects aim to promote the use of Green Hydrogen in the transport sector. The projects include deploying a total of 37 vehicles, comprising 15 hydrogen fuel cell-based vehicles and 22 hydrogen internal combustion engine-based vehicles, on ten different routes across the country. Additionally, nine hydrogen refuelling stations will be established to support these vehicles. State-run entities such as NTPC, ANERT, HPCL, BPCL, and IoCL are also part of these projects. The total financial support for these projects amounts to ₹208 crore from the Centre, with the goal of commissioning them within the next 18-24 months. The focus of these initiatives is to develop commercially viable technologies for utilizing hydrogen as a fuel in buses and trucks and to assess the practicality and effectiveness of hydrogen-based vehicles and refuelling stations. By validating the technical feasibility, performance, and economic viability of these technologies under real-world operational conditions, the projects aim to pave the way for the scale-up of hydrogen-based vehicles in India's transportation infrastructure.
