ITM Power to Supply 100MW of Trident Stacks for Shell's Refhyne II Project in Germany
Key Ideas
  • ITM Power to supply 100MW of Trident stacks and skids for the Shell Rheinland Energy and Chemicals Park in Germany, aiming to produce 44,000 kilogrammes of renewable hydrogen daily.
  • Linde Engineering chosen as EPC integrator for Refhyne II project, scheduled to start operation in 2027, following the success of the 10MW Refhyne I plant in 2021.
  • The project is in line with EU targets for renewable hydrogen use in industry and transport, supported by the German Federal Government's regulatory framework and funding from the EU's Horizon 2020 programme.
  • ITM Power's CEO Dennis Schulz highlights the importance of their technology's performance in securing the contract and previous experience in green hydrogen projects across Europe.
ITM Power has secured a contract for the Refhyne II project in Germany, where it will supply 100MW of Trident stacks and skids to the Shell Rheinland Energy and Chemicals Park. The project, with Linde Engineering as the EPC integrator, aims to produce up to 44,000 kilogrammes of renewable hydrogen daily using PEM electrolysis by 2027. This initiative will help decarbonize fuel production at Shell's Wesseling refinery by replacing natural gas-based hydrogen with renewable hydrogen from Refhyne II. The project builds on the success of the 10MW Refhyne I plant operational since 2021 and leverages ITM's and Linde's expertise in green hydrogen projects. Supported by EU targets and German policies, Refhyne II has also received funding from the EU's Horizon 2020 programme. ITM Power's CEO emphasized the crucial role of their technology's performance and experience in securing this large-scale commercial project. Additionally, ITM Power recently reserved production capacity for its Neptune II units, demonstrating the growing demand for their 'plug and play' hydrogen systems.
