The Murchison Green Hydrogen project in Western Australia has received a significant boost with $814 million in funding from the Federal Government's Hydrogen Headstart program. The project, led by Danish firm Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, plans to build a large-scale wind and solar-powered ammonia production plant near the town of Kalbarri on the Mid-West coast. With over 500 wind turbines and 7000 hectares of solar panels, the project aims to produce hydrogen through electrolysis and export 1.8 million tonnes of ammonia to Asia annually. This investment is a crucial step in Australia's renewable energy sector, with Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen highlighting the country's potential to become a renewable energy superpower. The project is expected to create 3600 jobs during construction and employ 600 workers for operations, providing a significant economic boost to the region. However, there are concerns from some residents in Kalbarri regarding the 140,000-hectare lease from the WA government for the project, which could restrict access to the area north of the town. Despite these concerns, the project is moving forward and plans to submit an Environmental Review Document to the WA Environmental Protection Authority for approval by mid-2025.
