Oman's Green Energy Vision: Transitioning Towards Carbon Neutrality
Key Ideas
  • Oman aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 aligning with Oman Vision 2040, focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy, hydrogen development, and carbon capture.
  • The energy transition strategy includes targets like 100% renewable energy contribution by 2050, 6MJ/US$ of GDP energy efficiency, and 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2050.
  • Ambitious goals for green hydrogen production are set, with targets of 1mn tonnes by 2030, 3.5mn tonnes by 2040, and 8mn tonnes by 2050, offering economic growth opportunities.
  • The Ministry of Energy and Minerals collaborates with public and private entities to drive the energy transition, aiming to provide energy for economic growth while reducing carbon emissions.
Oman is intensifying its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 in line with Oman Vision 2040, focusing on an energy transition strategy led by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. This strategy prioritizes energy efficiency, renewable energy, hydrogen development, and carbon capture while emphasizing key principles like energy security and developing local capabilities. Maryam bint Mohammed al Hashimi highlighted the plan's objectives, including supporting economic growth, reducing carbon emissions, creating new job opportunities, and promoting skilled national talent. Oman plans significant increases in renewable energy contributions and energy efficiency by 2050, alongside targets for transitioning to zero-emission vehicles. Moreover, the country sets ambitious goals for green hydrogen production, aiming for substantial quantities over the next three decades. Maryam emphasized that the energy transition presents economic growth prospects due to Oman's renewable energy resources. The strategy also includes visits to designated renewable energy and hydrogen project sites, identified under a Royal decree, aligning with the plans of Hydrogen Oman Company (Hydrom).
