Pioneering Low-Carbon Hydrogen Hub Unveiled in Northeast England
Key Ideas
  • Equinor, Centrica, and SSE Thermal are collaborating on the Humber Hydrogen Hub projects to produce up to 1.2GW of blue hydrogen and up to 1GW of green hydrogen in Yorkshire and Humber.
  • The plans include transforming the Easington gas terminal into a hydrogen production facility by the end of the decade, aiming to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 100,000 tonnes per year.
  • The project also involves the development of a 45-km hydrogen pipeline to link various hydrogen production and storage facilities in the region, fostering a growing hydrogen economy by the 2030s and '40s.
  • The partners envision using low-carbon hydrogen for sustainable aviation fuel and storage in geologically unique salt caverns to enhance energy security and support the UK's green energy transition.
Equinor, Centrica, and SSE Thermal have unveiled the Humber Hydrogen Hub projects in northeast England, focusing on low-carbon hydrogen production. The transformation of the Easington gas terminal into a hydrogen production facility is a key part of this initiative, with plans to produce significant amounts of blue and green hydrogen. Detailed engineering studies have been conducted to assess the potential of producing up to 1.2GW of blue hydrogen and 1GW of green hydrogen at Easington. The partners aim to commission initial projects by the end of the decade, with further expansion in the 2030s. Additionally, proposals for a green hydrogen electrolyser have been submitted to the UK Government to support the project. The partners are targeting to displace natural gas demand and reduce carbon emissions at the site. The project includes plans for a 45-km hydrogen pipeline to connect various hydrogen production and storage facilities in the region, fostering a growing hydrogen economy. Moreover, the utilization of low-carbon hydrogen for sustainable aviation fuel and storage in geologically unique salt caverns will contribute to improving energy security and supporting the UK's green energy transition.
