Union Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated a fleet of green hydrogen buses in Leh, marking a significant step towards sustainable transportation. NTPC's Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh features a 1.7 MW solar plant, an 80 kg/day hydrogen filling station, and 5 hydrogen-powered buses. These buses can cover 300 km per filling, with the project operating at an altitude of 3650 meters above sea level, making it the world's highest such initiative. The initiative is designed to function efficiently in low-density air and sub-zero temperatures, highlighting the adaptability of green hydrogen technology. By reducing carbon emissions by 350 MT/year and releasing 230 MT/year of pure oxygen, equivalent to planting 13,000 trees annually, the project underscores the environmental advantages of green hydrogen. Ladakh's conducive environment with high solar irradiance and low temperatures presents a ripe opportunity for green hydrogen production and utilization, enabling self-sufficiency in energy needs and eliminating fossil fuel logistics. NTPC's commitment extends beyond Leh, with plans to implement more green hydrogen projects nationwide and establish a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh. This initiative aligns with India's efforts to enhance renewable energy capacity and promote sustainable transportation solutions.
