Revolutionizing Steel Production: India's First Green Hydrogen-Powered Facility
Key Ideas
- Gensol Engineering partners with Matrix Gas & Renewables to develop India's first and largest green hydrogen-powered steel facility.
- The initiative is part of India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to revolutionize sustainable steel production by replacing fossil fuels with 100% green hydrogen.
- The project, supported by the Government of India, will reduce carbon emissions, establish India as a key player in green steel production, and set new benchmarks for clean iron production.
- The consortium's efforts include a pilot plant with a capacity of 50 tons per day, with plans for further developments in different regions targeting small- to medium-scale steel producers.
Gensol Engineering has announced a partnership with Matrix Gas & Renewables to develop India's first and largest green hydrogen-powered steel facility, a part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The project aims to revolutionize sustainable steel production by utilizing 100% green hydrogen instead of traditional fossil fuels. With a total capital expenditure of ₹321 crore, the Government of India will provide incentives covering 50% of the project's capex. The plant will employ direct reduced iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology to convert iron ore into sponge iron without emitting CO₂.
Unlike conventional methods relying on coal or natural gas, the facility will use green hydrogen from renewable sources, significantly reducing carbon emissions. The initiative is part of three pilot programs sanctioned by MECON with collaborations from the Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The project consortium, which includes Matrix Gas & Renewables, Gensol Engineering, IIT Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB from Sweden, aims to establish India as a key player in green steel production.
Matrix Gas & Renewables plans further developments in various regions, targeting small- to medium-scale steel producers. The pilot plant with a capacity of 50 tons per day is expected to set a precedent for similar facilities across the country. The initiative aligns with India's vision of achieving net-zero emissions while enhancing industrial capabilities. The Government of India and stakeholders are collaborating to ensure the success of this project under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
