Scotland's Whisky Industry to Benefit from Green Hydrogen Hub Investment
Key Ideas
- Scottish Government allocates £3.1 million for a green hydrogen hub in Speyside, creating 100 high-skilled jobs by 2032.
- The hub is expected to produce 200MW of green hydrogen annually, reducing CO2 emissions by 190,000 tonnes per year.
- Green hydrogen will support decarbonisation of the whisky industry and be used for transportation, industrial heat, and energy for 40 sites in the region.
- The funding from the government and Storegga's investment of £6.2 million will contribute to Scotland's energy transition and net-zero goals.
The Scottish Government is investing £3.1 million in the development of a green hydrogen hub in Speyside, Moray, to support the whisky industry's transition towards sustainability. This initiative by Storegga aims to create around 100 permanent high-skilled jobs by 2032, producing 200MW of green hydrogen annually. The green hydrogen hub is projected to save 190,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to a 35% reduction in the whisky sector's emissions, benefiting around 40 industrial sites, including whisky distilleries, in the region.
Green hydrogen, produced by renewable energy, will help decarbonise the sector by providing clean energy for distilling and fueling transportation. The investment, matched by Storegga, totals £6.2 million and complements the Scottish Government's Hydrogen Innovation Scheme. Acting Energy Secretary Gillian Martin highlighted the importance of green hydrogen in Scotland's energy transition, leveraging the country's renewable energy potential.
Storegga CEO, Tim Stedman, expressed gratitude for the government's support, emphasizing the project's role in reducing carbon emissions, supporting local communities, and driving sustainable industrial practices. The collaboration between government, industry, and the community underscores the commitment to achieving net-zero goals and creating long-term benefits for the region.
