The Spanish government has announced its selection of two green hydrogen projects located in the Tarragona municipalities of Ascó and La Pobla de Mafumet. These projects, part of a larger plan driven by the European Union's Next Generation funds amounting to 1,214 million euros, have been praised by the third vice president and minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen. These initiatives, such as the HyBERUS and Tarragona Hydrogen Network projects, are expected to receive a significant financial boost, with the Catalonia projects alone requiring 236 million euros out of a total investment of 617 million. The green hydrogen clusters and valleys project, discussed at a news breakfast in Madrid, aims to position Spain as a leading entity in sustainable energy production and decarbonisation. The green light given to these projects reflects the government's commitment to fostering a sustainable energy ecosystem with close-to-source consumption of green hydrogen. Aagesen highlighted the impact of the approved projects, noting that they are set to generate 4 GW of capacity, accounting for a third of the PNIEC objectives. Additionally, the projects are expected to attract a total investment of 5,000 million euros, creating 9,000 direct jobs and 11,000 indirect jobs. The minister believes that the projects will not only drive economic growth but also solidify Spain's position in the renewable energy sector. Renewable hydrogen is considered a national success story by Aagesen, who emphasized Spain's competitive edge in renewable energy production, particularly due to its wind and photovoltaic resources.
