Sun Cable's Australia-Asia PowerLink project has received principal environmental approval from the Northern Territory government and NT Environment Protection Authority. The project aims to connect Australia's Northern Territory with Singapore through a 4,300km subsea cable, providing between 17GW and 20GW of solar capacity and 36.42-42GWh of energy storage. Upon completion, it will supply power to Darwin and the surrounding region, as well as deliver up to 15% of Singapore's total electricity needs. The project is estimated to bring over AU$20 billion in economic value to the Northern Territory during its construction and first 35 years of operation. Sun Cable's ambitious project is set to deliver 4GW of green electricity to Darwin's green industrial customers in two stages, with 1.75GW designated for Singapore. The project, backed by Australian billionaires Mike Cannon-Brookes and Andrew Forrest, is targeting a Final Investment Decision in 2027. This initiative is viewed as a significant opportunity for the Northern Territory to lead in renewable energy, facilitating green industrial development and ventures in areas like green minerals, hydrogen, e-fuels, and data centers.
