German gas network operator Thyssengas GmbH has taken a significant step towards advancing Germany's hydrogen infrastructure by embarking on hydrogen pipeline development. The project forms a crucial part of the nation's hydrogen core network, which received final approval recently. Involving the construction and conversion of around 1,100 kilometers of pipelines across 35 projects, the aim is to connect major industrial hubs and mid-sized companies in key regions like Muensterland, the Ruhr region, and the Rhineland to the hydrogen infrastructure. Thyssengas is focusing on moving time-critical hydrogen projects into the implementation phase, ensuring necessary planning and approval processes are in place. The company is also working on making future projects market-ready by collaborating with potential hydrogen offtakers, policymakers, and authorities. Arne Dammer, the Head of Strategy and Innovation at Thyssengas, has underlined the importance of binding commitments, early planning, and wider distribution of hydrogen for the successful growth of the hydrogen market. Dammer advocates formalizing non-binding commitments into contracts and integrating future connections during the core network's development to efficiently serve regional hydrogen customers. Moreover, early consideration of hydrogen distribution from the core network to broader regions is crucial. Thyssengas' proactive approach signals a positive momentum towards establishing a robust hydrogen infrastructure in Germany.
