TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Projects in Europe
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and Air Liquide signed agreements to develop green hydrogen projects using offshore wind power, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions from refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands.
  • Two projects will produce a total of 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, with TotalEnergies investing around EUR 600 million in the initiatives.
  • The collaborations will help TotalEnergies meet its goal of decarbonizing their European refineries by 2030, leveraging renewable energy sources and reducing annual CO2 emissions by approximately three million tonnes.
  • Air Liquide emphasizes the importance of such projects in reducing emissions in challenging sectors, highlighting their commitment to carbon neutrality and supporting Europe's decarbonization efforts.
French energy major TotalEnergies and industrial gas supplier Air Liquide have entered into agreements to develop projects focused on offshore wind-powered production and delivery of green hydrogen in Europe. The initiatives aim to produce 45,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, primarily using renewable power generated by the OranjeWind offshore wind farm developed by TotalEnergies and RWE. The projects intend to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from TotalEnergies' refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000 tonnes per year, aligning with European renewable energy targets. Under the agreements, a 250 MW electrolyzer will be constructed near the Zeeland refinery in the Netherlands to enable the production of 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, with most of it being delivered to Zeeland's platform. Additionally, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement with Air Liquide for 130 MW of green hydrogen production in Antwerp, Belgium, as part of Air Liquide's ELYgator electrolyzer project in Maasvlakte, Netherlands. TotalEnergies plans to use low-carbon hydrogen to decarbonize its European refineries, aiming to reduce its annual CO2 emissions by three million tonnes by 2030. The company has already committed to green hydrogen supplies at various locations across Europe. Air Liquide's Executive Committee Member, Emilie Mouren-Renouard, highlighted the significance of such projects in reducing emissions in challenging sectors like industry and heavy mobility. The collaborations reflect Air Liquide's commitment to carbon neutrality, supporting Europe's decarbonization goals, and developing sustainable business models in the energy sector.
