TotalEnergies and RWE Collaborate on OranjeWind Project for Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
- TotalEnergies acquires 50% stake in the 795-MW OranjeWind project in the Dutch North Sea, aiming to produce green hydrogen for its refineries and reduce CO2 emissions.
- RWE to develop the wind farm with added electrolyzers for hydrogen production, starting construction in 2026 for full commissioning by early 2028.
- Ocean Grazer's modular energy storage solution and additional innovations like offshore solar power and LiDAR system will be implemented to create a blueprint for the future Dutch energy system.
- Collaboration between TotalEnergies and RWE aims to address challenges of intermittent wind generation and flexible energy demand for a sustainable energy future.
TotalEnergies has entered into agreements with RWE to acquire a 50% stake in the 795-MW OranjeWind project located in the Dutch North Sea. The objective of this collaboration is to utilize the electricity generated by the project to power 350-MW electrolyzer projects. This initiative is expected to produce around 40,000 tons per year of green hydrogen, which will be used to replace the current hydrogen sources in TotalEnergies' refineries in northern Europe, resulting in a significant reduction of approximately 400,000 tons per year in CO2 emissions. The wind farm, situated 53 km off the Dutch coast, was awarded to RWE in 2022 under the Dutch Hollandse Kust West VII tender, with subsequent plans to incorporate electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. Construction of the OranjeWind project is scheduled to commence in 2026, aiming for full completion by early 2028. This venture marks TotalEnergies' first offshore wind endeavor in the Netherlands. Additionally, the collaboration will see the implementation of Ocean Grazer's Ocean Battery modular energy storage solution for efficient energy utilization. Further innovations, such as offshore floating solar power, a subsea lithium-ion battery, and a LiDAR power forecasting system, are also in the pipeline for the project. The strategic partnership between TotalEnergies and RWE is envisioned to set the stage for the future Dutch energy system by addressing issues related to intermittent wind generation and ensuring adaptability to fluctuating energy demands.
