Key Ideas
- EVREC and Abraxas Power Corp. have submitted an environmental assessment for their green energy hub project in Botwood, Newfoundland, aiming to develop a 3.5 GW onshore wind farm for green hydrogen and ammonia production.
- The project, with an estimated capital investment of CAD$12 billion, is expected to significantly impact the provincial economy, increasing GDP by CAD$7.8 billion over 34 years and contributing CAD$3.1 billion in employment income within the province.
- It is projected to support over 10,900 person-years of employment during construction and over 21,600 jobs during the operating period, boosting household spending by over CAD$2.2 billion and contributing CAD$220 million in tax revenue to municipal governments over a 38-year period.
- Abraxas Power's CEO highlighted the importance of the project in transforming the future of energy, fostering economic stability, creating high-skilled job opportunities, and establishing strong partnerships with local communities.
Abraxas Power Corp. and its subsidiary, Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC), have announced the submission of an environmental assessment registration for their green energy hub project in the Botwood area of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The project aims to develop a 3.5 GW onshore wind farm that will be associated with energy and molecular storage facilities for the production of green hydrogen (H₂) and green ammonia (NH₃). EVREC's initiative plans to generate up to 200,000 tons of green hydrogen and up to 1,000,000 tons of green ammonia annually for export to global markets.
EVREC's project, which received access to over 300 square kilometers of crown lands in Central Newfoundland, represents a significant investment with an estimated capital of CAD$12 billion. The economic impact study conducted by Jupia Consulting indicates that the project is expected to boost the provincial Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by CAD$7.8 billion over its 34-year lifespan, excluding other GDP impacts. Additionally, it is anticipated to generate CAD$3.1 billion in employment income within the province.
The project is forecasted to create substantial employment opportunities, supporting over 10,900 person-years of employment during construction and more than 21,600 jobs during its operating period. It is also expected to have positive effects on household spending, tax revenue for municipal governments, and government revenues at both provincial and federal levels. The CEO of Abraxas Power emphasized the importance of the project in driving economic growth, creating jobs, and establishing strong community partnerships.
