The UK has initiated trials for firing member-produced ceramic products using a pilot kiln that operates entirely on hydrogen, marking a significant milestone in the 'Demonstrating Hydrogen in the Ceramics Sector' project. Led by Dr. Andrew McDermott, the Deputy Chief Executive of Ceramics UK, this project is the first of its kind globally, showcasing the feasibility of hydrogen as a fuel for ceramic production. The custom-built pilot kiln, part of a collaboration with Glass Futures in St Helens, aims to explore the potential of hydrogen in the ceramics industry. Supported by 13 ceramic manufacturing companies and funded through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, this project signifies a crucial step towards a lower-carbon future for the sector.
