Union Minister Flags-off Green Hydrogen Buses in Leh, Applauds NTPC's Efforts
Key Ideas
  • Union Minister Manohar Lal flagged-off NTPC's fleet of green hydrogen buses in Leh, showcasing the country's commitment to energy security and decarbonisation.
  • The Green Hydrogen Mobility Project at Leh includes a 1.7 MW solar plant, hydrogen filling station, and 5 intra-city buses, marking a significant step towards sustainable transportation.
  • The project at 3650m altitude will reduce carbon emissions by around 350 MT/year and contribute 230 MT/year of oxygen, supporting environmental sustainability equivalent to planting 13000 trees.
  • NTPC is expanding its green hydrogen projects in India, focusing on renewable energy capacity growth and establishing a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh for sustainable energy solutions.
Shri Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, inaugurated NTPC's fleet of green hydrogen buses at Leh, underlining the government's commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The project in Leh includes a 1.7 MW solar plant, a hydrogen filling station capable of producing 80 kg of green hydrogen per day, and 5 intra-city buses powered by hydrogen technology. During the launch, the Union Minister personally traveled 12 km in one of the hydrogen buses from the filling station to the Leh airport, showcasing the practicality and efficacy of the green hydrogen mobility project. He commended NTPC for its efforts in enhancing energy security and reducing carbon footprint through the adoption of hydrogen technologies in various sectors, including mobility and blending with PNG and green methanol. The project at an altitude of 3650m is the world's highest green hydrogen mobility project, designed to operate in challenging conditions like low air density and sub-zero temperatures. It is estimated to mitigate around 350 MT/year of carbon emissions and contribute 230 MT/year of pure oxygen, benefiting the environment equivalent to planting approximately 13000 trees annually. The unique geographic and climatic conditions of Ladakh make it a promising location for green hydrogen production and utilization, offering a self-sufficient and sustainable energy solution. NTPC's plans to expand hydrogen mobility projects across India and focus on scaling up renewable energy capacity, including establishing a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh, demonstrate a strategic commitment to sustainable energy transitions.
