Uniper and Electric Hydrogen Partnership to Drive Green Hydrogen Production in Germany
Key Ideas
  • Uniper selects Electric Hydrogen as its exclusive partner to design a 200 MW electrolyser plant for the Green Wilhelmshaven project in Northern Germany.
  • The project includes large-scale electrolysis for green hydrogen production and an ammonia import terminal, aiming to decarbonize German and European industry.
  • Electric Hydrogen's advanced electrolysis technology and Uniper's commitment to low-carbon energy will help meet Germany's demand for green hydrogen.
  • The Green Wilhelmshaven projects will establish Wilhelmshaven as a key hub for green hydrogen production in Germany, supported by PCI status.
Uniper, a European energy company, has partnered with Electric Hydrogen to develop a 200 MW electrolyser plant for the Green Wilhelmshaven project in Northern Germany. The project includes large-scale electrolysis to produce green hydrogen and an ammonia import terminal. The aim is to drive the decarbonization of the German and European industry. The electrolyser will be built in Wilhelmshaven on the site of Uniper’s former coal-fired power plant, while the ammonia import terminal will be in the vicinity of the LNG terminal operated by a Uniper subsidiary. The joint effort seeks to meet a significant portion of Germany's green hydrogen demand, connecting both plants to the German hydrogen backbone and underground storage facilities in the region. By utilizing renewable electricity from wind farms, the large-scale electrolysis will generate zero-carbon green hydrogen for Uniper's industrial clients. This initiative positions Wilhelmshaven as a central hub for green hydrogen in Germany, supported by the 'Project of Common Interest' (PCI) status. Uniper and Electric Hydrogen are enthusiastic about advancing the energy transition and making the switch to zero-carbon green hydrogen economically feasible.
