Uniper has chosen Liquid Wind to lead the development of a significant 100,000-tonne green hydrogen-based e-methanol project in Östersund, Sweden. The project, known as NorthStarH2, is designed to produce low-carbon methanol that will serve as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels in the shipping and chemical sectors. By combining biogenic carbon dioxide and green hydrogen, Liquid Wind plans to create e-methanol using a standardized design methodology. Earlier this year, Uniper and Liquid Wind established a strategic partnership to accelerate the development of e-methanol plants, emphasizing cost reduction and supply chain enhancement. Jan Taschenberger, Uniper's Chief Operating Officer for New Green Power and Gas, highlighted the project's significance in Uniper's energy transition strategy, noting the need for innovative collaborations like the one with Liquid Wind. Liquid Wind's founder and CEO, Claes Fredriksson, expressed confidence in the pivotal role of e-fuels, such as e-methanol, in electrifying various industries like shipping, aviation, and chemicals. Despite challenges faced by their previous project, FlagshipONE, Liquid Wind remains steadfast in its goal to develop 10 similar projects in the Nordics by 2030. Notwithstanding hurdles in consumer demand and pricing competitiveness, Fredriksson remains optimistic about the market for e-methanol.
