West Virginia Commits $10 Million to Innovative Hydrogen and Carbon Capture Project
Key Ideas
  • Secured $10 million state funding to develop BrightLoop™ hydrogen and carbon capture facility
  • Creation of 28 full-time local jobs and additional construction positions by 2030
  • Utilizes proprietary BrightLoop chemical looping technology for efficient hydrogen production and carbon capture
  • Aiming to meet growing market demand for low-carbon hydrogen across various industries
Babcock & Wilcox has successfully obtained $10 million in funding from the West Virginia Department of Economic Development to establish a BrightLoop™ hydrogen production and carbon capture facility in Mason County. The project, managed by Mountaineer C2H, will use coal and biomass to generate low-carbon-emission hydrogen. The funding will be distributed based on achieving project milestones, with a completion target set for 2030. The agreement mandates the creation of 28 permanent local job positions, in addition to roles related to construction. The facility will employ Babcock & Wilcox's unique BrightLoop technology, utilizing iron-oxide TranspO2rt™ particles to produce hydrogen while efficiently capturing carbon emissions at a lower cost compared to other alternatives. This initiative not only enhances economic development in the region but also aligns with the increasing demand for low-carbon hydrogen solutions in various sectors.
